Transfer Your Data to Your Nokia Lumia

Transfer Your Data to Your Nokia Lumia
proud owner of a new Nokia Lumia phone? This guide will help you transfer essential data from your current phone such as your contacts, photos, and calendar events to the Nokia Lumia.
We will take a look at two ways this can be done: using a Windows PC as a conduit, or directly from your old phone to the Nokia Lumia.

Getting Started

You have two options in order to sync your personal data from your older phone to the Nokia Lumia. The first path to do this is through a PC client and will sync your personal data to the cloud; the Nokia Lumia will then download the data from the cloud. This path requires that you currently own an older Nokia device.
The second path is using just the two phones, no mediator needed; the data will be transferred directly from one phone to the other.
We will explore both options, since these two paths are not mutually exclusive: You might want to do both to ensure that your personal data also has a home on the cloud, apart from being transferred to the Nokia Lumia.

What you will need to get started

Apart from the phones in question, you will need the following:
  • If you are coming from an older Nokia phone, download the Nokia Suite(http://www.nokia.com/global/support/nokia-suite/)
  • If you had a non-Nokia phone, you will need an app. See ‘Syncing data from iPhone, Blackberry, or Android to the Nokia Lumia’ for more
  • In either cases, you will need a Microsoft account first

Step 0: Setting up your Microsoft account

Skip this step, if you already have a Microsoft account setup. Your Microsoft account (erstwhile Windows Live ID/Hotmail account) is a one-stop pass to access everything Microsoft. If you are an Xbox Live user, then you already have one of these; ditto if you use services such as Hotmail (now Outlook.com). For Windows Phone 8 devices, the Microsoft account is used to access the Store (where the apps reside).
Setting up is simple, follow these steps on your Nokia Lumia phone:
  1. Unlock your phone to access the home screen
  2. Flick left from the home screen to access the app screen
  3. Scroll down to find the Settings app, it should have a gear icon next to it Windows Phone 8's settings icon
  4. Find the ‘email + accounts’ entry under Settings, tap on it
  5. Click on ‘add an account’ to add a Microsoft account
Follow the on-screen prompts to add a Microsoft account.
Now that you have a Microsoft account setup, we have the two options that we spoke of. Once again, you can take both routes if you have a Nokia Symbian device. Let’s start with the cloud setup.

Using SkyDrive to backup and sync your contacts from an older Nokia phone

If you are coming to the Nokia Lumia from an older Nokia Symbian phone, then this is the way to go. First, if you don’t already have it, download the Nokia Suite(http://www.nokia.com/global/support/nokia-suite/), then set it up and launch it. You will need a Nokia account to do so. This is a two-stage process: first, you will copy your phone’s data to SkyDrive; then you will sign in with your Microsoft account on your Nokia Lumia phone to access the copied content.
Once you have the Nokia Suite started, follow these steps:
  1. Click on Tools > Upload to Skydrive
  2. Click on Start
  3. In the next screen you can choose the data you wish to sync to the cloud. NOTE: you can only copy photos which are in these formats: jpg, gif, png
  4. Before you can start the sync, the Nokia Suite will ask you to grant it permission to access your SkyDrive account. This will require you to sign in to your Microsoft account. Please do so and then click on Yes in the next screen
  5. That’s pretty much that. The Nokia Suite will now transfer your personal data to SkyDrive
  6. Once done, you have finished the first stage of this sync process
Click here to upload your phone's data to Skydrive
Step 1: Click here to start the process which will upload your Nokia phone’s data to Skydrive
Click on start to begin the upload process
Step 2: Click on Start to begin the upload process
Step 3: Here, you can choose which data you sync to the cloud
Step 3: Here, you can choose which data you sync to the cloud
Login to your SkyDrive account first
Step 4a: Login to your SkyDrive account first
Grant the Nokia Suite permission to access your SkyDrive account
Step 4b: Grant the Nokia Suite permission to access your SkyDrive account
Nokia Suite will now sync your phone's data to the cloud
Step 5a: Nokia Suite will now sync your phone’s data to the cloud
...And done. Your Nokia phone's data is now synced to your SkyDrive account
Step 5b: …And done. Your Nokia phone’s data is now synced to your SkyDrive account
Your contacts will now be stored in the SkyDrive Phonebook. Your photos will be saved to an album named after your old phone (E5-00, in my case).
To complete the process, log in to your Microsoft account on your Nokia Lumia if you haven’t already (see Step 0). If you had logged in earlier, your data should start syncing with your Nokia Lumia phone through SkyDrive, give it some time…
This process has synced your photos, contacts and calendar entries, but what about your SMS messages, you ask? Unfortunately, there isn’t a straightforward way to sync your messages to the Nokia Lumia using the Nokia Suite; at least as of this writing. But fret not, the second option will also allow you to upload your SMSes!

Syncing data from iPhone, Blackberry, or Android to the Nokia Lumia

You should consider this route if:
  • You want to transfer your data from an iPhone, an Android, or a Blackberry
  • You want to transfer your contacts and SMS messages
This method uses an app on the Nokia Lumia phone. The app wont’ transfer your calendar entries or your photos currently; although, the latter is hinted at in a future release of the app.
Let’s get started, follow these steps:
  1. On your Nokia Lumia phone click on the Store icon to access the apps marketplace
  2. Click on ‘Apps from Nokia’
  3. Scroll down to find the app called ‘Transfer my Data’; it’s a free app from Nokia
  4. Tap on it, download it
  5. Tap the Nokia Lumia’s home button
  6. Swipe left to access the app screen. Scroll down to find the Transfer my Data app. Tap to launch
  7. To transfer SMS messages and contacts from your old phone to the Nokia Lumia, you will need to enable Bluetooth on both phones
  8. Tap Continue in the Transfer my Data app, the next screen will prompt you to turn on your Bluetooth if it isn’t on
  9. Meanwhile, turn on the Bluetooth on your other phone and make sure the phone is discoverable
  10. Once Bluetooth is turned on, the Nokia Lumia will search for your other phone and will ask you to pair the two. Follow the on-screen prompts on both phones to set up the pairing
  11. Tap on your older phone to start the transfer process
  12. You can transfer your contacts and text messages
  13. The next screen will show you the transfer progress. Depending on the data being transferred, this can take several minutes. Keep the phones close to each other and let them complete the process
  14. All done! You will find your contacts under the Nokia Lumia phone’s People Hub and your text messages under the Messaging app

On your Windows 8 Phone, head to Apps from Nokia to start the process
Step 2: On your Windows 8 Phone, head to Apps from Nokia to start the process
Under the Apps from Nokia section, scroll down to find the Transfer my Data app
Step 3: Under the Apps from Nokia section, scroll down to find the Transfer my Data app
Once the Bluetooth is turned on for both your phones, pair the two and start the transfer process
Step 10: Once the Bluetooth is turned on for both your phones, pair the two and start the transfer process
You can transfer your contacts and text messages (SMS) between the two phones
Step 12: You can transfer your contacts and text messages (SMS) between the two phones
Here, you will see the transfer progress
Step 13: Here, you will see the transfer progress
...And we're done! You have now transferred your contacts and SMS messages from your old phone to the Nokia Lumia
Step 14: …And we’re done! You have now transferred your contacts and SMS messages from your old phone to the Nokia Lumia

In Conclusion

It’s really strange that the Nokia Lumia doesn’t sync with the older Nokia Suite – that would’ve eliminated the need to juggle two different apps, across different platforms. Nevertheless, this is how things are, and all said and done, it’s not very difficult to get data from the older Nokias to the Nokia Lumia series of phone.
To conclude: (1) you can transfer your contacts, calendar and photos using a combination of Nokia Suite and SkyDrive (assuming you are coming to the Nokia Lumia from an older Nokia phone). (2) you can transfer your contacts and text messages using a native Nokia Lumia app, over Bluetooth (assuming you are coming to the Nokia Lumia from a non-Nokia phone).

Password Protect folders in Windows without any Software

Most of us have private data. Not all of us have a private computer to keep that data. So, we just end up with other people viewing that data. Although password protecting software do work, it is almost useless to hide private data with these software(because we are always questioned as to what it is that we are hiding with the help of these software).

Hidden folders do not work as they can be easily searched with Windows Search. So, we need an alternative way to create hidden password protected folders which only we can access. And that is exactly what we will learn in this post.

With this trick, you can create a secure password protected folder in Windows which no one except you can access. To use this trick, follow the instructions given below:-

1.  Open Notepad.
2.  Copy and paste the exact code given below:-

cls
@ECHO OFF
title www.tweakandtrick.com
if EXIST "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" goto UNLOCK
if NOT EXIST MyFolder goto MDMyFolder
:CONFIRM
echo Are you sure to lock this folder? (Y/N)
set/p "cho=>"
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
goto CONFIRM
:LOCK
ren MyFolder "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
attrib +h +s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
echo Folder locked
goto End
:UNLOCK
echo Enter password to Unlock Your Secure Folder
set/p "pass=>"
if NOT %pass%== (password that u want ) goto FAIL
attrib -h -s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
ren "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" MyFolder
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
:FAIL
echo Invalid password
goto end
:MDMyFolder
md MyFolder
echo MyFolder created successfully
goto End
:End

Hide Folders without any Software

3.  Click on the File Menu. Click on Save As.
4.  Select All Types in the Save As Type dropdown menu. Save the file as *.bat or Locker.bat.

After creating the file, double click on the Saved file. A new folder will be created. Enter your data in the folder. Again, double click on the batch file. Type Y and press Enter. The folder will be hidden from view.

To re-view your folder, double click on the saved batch file. Enter password as password u create  without quotes and press Enter key. This is also the default password. Your folder will be visible again.

To change the default password, edit the part of the code given in blue and enter your own password.

The overall usability of this trick can be improved by deleting the batch file after hiding your folder and re-creating it when you wish to access your folder again.

If you face any problem using this trick, you can write a comment and I will do my best to help you.

Note: This works on Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP and Vista. First try this on useless data to be sure and then only hide your personal data.

Enable Registry Editor disabled by Administrator or Virus

Registry Editor is a useful utility in Windows which allows users to easily change advanced Windows settings by altering registry keys present in a hierarchical arrangement called the Windows Registry. Despite being such a powerful tool, Registry Editor is not totally error-proof.

A simple virus infection is all it takes to render it useless. Or, there are times when your administrator has actually disabled Registry Editing. When you try to open the Registry Editor in one such computer, you are likely to receive the“Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator” error. Due to this error, it is impossible to remove this restriction using Registry Editor itself.

Enable Registry Editor
Windows Registry Editor

This article suggests some workarounds for re-enabling Registry editing in a computer running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003/ 2008, Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Enable Registry Editor Using Group Policy Editor

  1. Click on Start. Go to Run. Users running Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista, go to Search.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
  3. Navigate to User Configuration/ Administrative Templates / System.
  4. In the work area, double click on "Prevent Access to registry editing tools".
  5. In the popup window, encircle Disabled and click on OK.
  6. Normally, Registry Editor will be immediately accessible. If it is not, restart your PC.
Group Policy Editor is not available on home editions of Windows.

Enabling Registry Editor using UnHookExec.inf from Symantec

Symantec has created a small .inf file which can be installed to remove restrictions on modifying registry keys at the click of a mouse. Most viruses, spywares, Trojans or worms normally affect the shell\open\command keys which allows them to run each time when a file of specific type is executed. Normally, they associate their execution with .exe files. UnHookExec.inf not only enables registry editing but also removes such associations.

Just save UnHookExec.inf and install it by right clicking and selecting install. Installing the file will not show any popup or notice box.

Enable Regedit by simply running a CMD Command

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Copy the code given below and paste it.
  3. reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /t Reg_dword /v DisableRegistryTools /f /d 0
  4. Save the file as EnableRegistry.bat. Run this file as Administrator if you use Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista. In Windows XP, simply open the file. CMD will flash for a second and then disappear. This indicates successful execution.
  5. Log Off and Log Back On.

Visual Basic Script to Enable/ Disable Registry Editor

 Doug Knox has created a VBS Script which allows users  to easily enable and disable Registry Editor. Just download regedit tools.vbs and double click on it. This script reverses the current state of Registry Editor. If registry editing is set to enabled, this script will disable it and if it is disabled, it will enable it.

If the above link does not work, copy the code given below in Notepad and save the file as *.vbs or Registry Editor.vbs.

Option Explicit
Dim WSHShell, n, MyBox, p, t, mustboot, errnum, vers
Dim enab, disab, jobfunc, itemtype
Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
p = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"
p = p & "DisableRegistryTools"
itemtype = "REG_DWORD"
mustboot = "Log off and back on, or restart your pc to" & vbCR & "effect the changes"
enab = "ENABLED"
disab = "DISABLED"
jobfunc = "Registry Editing Tools are now "
t = "Confirmation"
Err.Clear
On Error Resume Next
n = WSHShell.RegRead (p)
On Error Goto 0
errnum = Err.Number
if errnum <> 0 then
WSHShell.RegWrite p, 0, itemtype
End If
If n = 0 Then
n = 1
WSHShell.RegWrite p, n, itemtype
Mybox = MsgBox(jobfunc & disab & vbCR & mustboot, 4096, t)
ElseIf n = 1 then
n = 0
WSHShell.RegWrite p, n, itemtype
Mybox = MsgBox(jobfunc & enab & vbCR & mustboot, 4096, t)
End If
After running the VBS file, if Registry Editing is not enabled, try restarting your PC.
